Indian AMI-50 Chief | MOPED OF THE DAY

Indian AMI-50 Chief

Indian AMI-50 Chief was built by Rayn (https://www.instagram.com/artistdaniels/).  Indian AMI50 is one of the few vintage mopeds that have a four-stroke single-cylinder 49cc engine.  The Indian four-stroke engine is a Taiwan copy of the Honda PC50 engine.  It’s a single-speed automatic.  American Moped Associates purchased the rights from the motorcycle brand Indian to use the name and logo for the AMI-50 Chief.

I own one myself and in my opinion, it’s a well-built moped.  Some of my favorite features of the Chief are the strong traditional front forks, these are very similar to the forks that come on General 5 Star Mopeds.  All AMI-50s come with large seats with a big storage trunk under the seat.  The rear fork is constructed from strong tubular steel.  The lines of the frame look great and the Mira “snowflake” wheels are in my top 5 best-looking moped mag wheels.

The big negative for me is the Honda PC50 clone engine.  Finding replacement or performance parts can be difficult.  I recommend to anyone interested in buying a Chief, to consider swapping the engine.  If the original engine is working then great, use it.  Once it breaks down to the point of needing to replace the top end or rebuild, save yourself the trouble and take the time to change the engine.  The original engine housed the pedals.  So replacing it with a two-stroke that has the pedals on the engine is recommended.  That’s what Ryan did here, he used the Minarelli V1 and says it was not difficult to swap onto the Indian.
