1990 Vespa Si Monte Carlo

1990 Vespa Si Monte Carlo mopeds from Germany built by Jul (https://www.instagram.com/jul_schmidt/).  A Vespa Si is a step-through moped built by Vespa and Piaggio.  One of the features that make these models stand out from other Vespa Mopeds is its mono-shock suspension.  The Monte Carlo is a version of the Si that has two traditional shocks in the rear.   The Monte Carlo also has traditional triple tree forks, whereas a standard Si didn’t.

The gas tank is built into the frame similar to the Vespa Ciao.  The engine however mounts to a swingarm/sub-frame like a Bravo or Grande.  The sub-frame on the Si is also different in design from the Bravo and Grande models.  This Vespa Si originally had a solo seat, Jul had a long seat upholstered to replace it.

I’ve never noticed the passenger handles on the seat before when looking at other Si models.  The gloss powder coat is a great contrast to the dark brown seat.  The integrated taillight into the frame is a good design element.

In the U.S. not many Si models were imported.  This design came about as mopeds were on the decline in popularity.  In European countries, the Vespa models continued to be made into the early 2000s’.  Newer models were still being created but did not get imported into the U.S.
